Jáchymov (Karlovy Vary) - The first phase of the square renovations has begun in Jáchymov. Workers are currently repairing the roadways, and the city has managed to obtain European funding for the revitalization of the area around St. Joachim's Church. Jáchymov has thus succeeded with applications for funding for all its projects this year. Its center will undergo a historical transformation, said the city's mayor Bronislav Grulich (TOP 09) to ČTK. "We received funding from the ROP for the revitalization of the square. This involves two projects together - the Road and Motorway Directorate is moving the road about two meters into the park, the city is building parking spaces, a sidewalk, areas, and new lighting. The entire project is estimated at about 20 million crowns, roughly half-and-half. It must be completed by the end of October this year," Grulich told ČTK. The grant will contribute about eight million crowns towards the costs. In the near future, the revitalization of the area around St. Joachim's Church will also begin. The city has managed to obtain funding from European funds for this as well. The space featuring the so-called Gate to Freedom and memorial stones commemorating the Jáchymov labor camps will undergo a complete transformation. During the reconstruction, they will have to temporarily disappear from the site. "Jáchymov will thus undergo changes like never before in its history," said the mayor. The construction costing 12.7 million crowns must also be completed by the end of October. In addition, Jáchymov received a grant for the repair of the retaining wall on Mincovní Street, which borders the square. The reconstruction will cost nearly ten million crowns, and the city has previously obtained additional millions for the retaining walls. This year's investments in Jáchymov, with the help of grants, will reach approximately 50 million crowns. This equals the annual budget of the city, which has 2,800 residents.
