Jáchymov (Karlovy Vary region) - The border town of Jáchymov has begun the renovation of the main Republic Square covering an area of 1.8 hectares. The town of three thousand residents is now revitalizing its lower half for 9.2 million crowns, with 90% funded by the European ROP program. The town must carry out the work in conjunction with the Directorate of Roads and Highways, which will shift the first-class road two meters into the park. The town currently lacks funds for the renovation of the upper part of the square. This was stated to ČTK by the mayor of the spa town, Bronislav Grulich.

"Looking down the hill, there will be two-way traffic on the right side, new parking spaces and sidewalks will be created in front of the houses. The left side of the square will be tranquil, which is the main point," Grulich said. The construction should be nearly completed this year.
The project to revitalize the entire square, a landmark of Jáchymov, was commissioned by the town 11 years ago, and the building permit has been in place for eight years. "However, the most important thing is that we reached an agreement with the Directorate of Roads and Highways. It was quite complicated. The Directorate did not want to carry out the construction," Grulich said.
Thanks to the relocation of the main road leading to the state border, space for sidewalks and parking spots will be created. The adjoining revitalization of the area in front of the panel houses for seven million crowns started last week. "We received a grant from the Ministry for Local Development from the program for the Regeneration of Panel Housing Estates. We will build a new thoroughfare, parking on both sides, and a sidewalk in front of the houses," Grulich said. The town hall wants to accomplish this as soon as possible since due to construction, parking will not be possible in the lower part of the square or in front of the panel houses.
The town has also received a multi-million grant for retaining walls in Lidická, Svojsíkova, Malá, and Žižkov streets.
The remaining upper part of the square will not be fully renovated, as the town already revitalized the small Hornické Square in front of the town hall for nine million crowns two years ago. The upper section near St. Joachim's Church will require about 20 million crowns. This will include new road surfaces, sidewalks, and landscape modifications. Jáchymov has a project for the revitalization of the entire area. "However, we had to divide it into phases because we could not secure such a large grant," the mayor stated.
