Jáchymov (Karlovy Vary) - Jáchymov is preparing for the renewal of part of the historic Republic Square, which has been calling for significant repairs for many years. However, the revitalization of this valuable area will likely only begin when it obtains a grant from the European Union. The first phase of the project is estimated to cost approximately 43.1 million crowns, while the total expenses for the entire project are estimated at around 68 million crowns. This was stated by Mayor Bronislav Grulich. The city tried its luck right away in the first call for applications for financial support from the Regional Operational Program Northwest, but was unsuccessful. Therefore, the application was revised, and the city council approved its submission in February. The municipality is expected to learn the result in a few weeks. In the event of success, the city could receive a grant of up to 92.5 percent of the total costs. "Our share of the first phase would be about three million," the mayor stated. The planned revitalization is expected to partially change the current appearance of the central area of the square. The project includes the creation of a pedestrian zone and park modifications. Benches, bins, and other architectural elements are to appear in the square. The modifications to the area will proceed from the town hall and the church towards the lower end of the square. "We anticipate three phases, each lasting about a year," Grulich noted. However, the poor condition of many historical buildings around the square remains a problem. Essentially all of them are in private hands, and the city cannot compel the owners to repair them. Grulich mentioned that perhaps the upcoming transformation of the square could motivate them. "The condition of the buildings has already been discussed several times in the past. This year, we are striving for a meeting of heritage conservationists, architects, and building owners, which should look for ways to change the situation,” he added.
