Brno - The citizens of Brno were introduced yesterday to a three-meter statue of light bulbs, which is meant to commemorate the inventor Thomas Alva Edison. At the square by the Centrum department store, it was ceremoniously unveiled by representatives of the city hall. It had waited approximately two years in a depository for this day. Tomáš Medek won a design competition for its portrayal in 2007, and the work was soon created. However, the restoration of the square, where the statue was to be placed, was delayed. The object is one of ten that are to beautify Brno over the next ten years in the project Sculptures for Brno. The authors of the idea intend to commemorate personalities who have left their mark in the city. The Vegetable Market has been adorned for about two years with a statue of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Kurt Gebauer depicted him as Cupid with one wing, balancing on the edge of a harpsichord. Mozart, as a child prodigy, performed at today's Reduta Theatre on the Vegetable Market. Edison also has a connection to Brno. Although the American never lived or worked in Brno, the local Mahen Theatre was the first theater building in Europe to be equipped with electric lighting, back in 1882. The scientist wanted to personally inspect the electrical installation, which is why he stopped in Brno during his trip through Europe in 1911. "He was very satisfied. A record of his visit is in the guest book of the Grand hotel,” states the internet encyclopedia of Brno. In the current pre-election period, the unveiling of new monuments and statues has piled up for the representatives of the city hall. Since last week, people can admire or criticize the statue of Justice in Moravské náměstí, which the author Marius Kotrba accompanied with a water feature. Soon, two more objects are expected at Moravské náměstí - a historical map of Brno and a water feature. At Freedom Square, there will be a giant clockwork. The ceremony is planned for next Saturday.
