Brno – This year, several events will commemorate the Great Synagogue in Brno, located at the corner of Spálená and Přízova streets, which was burned down by the Nazis in 1939. The South Moravian Region, the Jewish Community in Brno, and the Institute for Archaeological Heritage Preservation have agreed with the landowner Brno Property Development to remember the building. The first step will be an archaeological survey at the site of the former synagogue, said regional representative Michal Doležel to ČTK.

"We started negotiations with the landowner together with the Jewish Community in Brno last spring. We were interested in what intentions the owner has for the land and how the synagogue could be commemorated,” noted Doležel. The first step will be the archaeological survey, which will be initiated by the Institute for Archaeological Heritage Preservation in March. It should uncover the foundations of the synagogue, on the site of which no new building has been constructed since its demolition.

"We anticipate that some artifacts will be found during the research, which we would then like to exhibit in the Löw-Beer villa. Guided tours will also take place at the site, for example as part of the Open House event. We also plan to install a poetry machine that will tell the stories of the synagogue," Doležel added.

The Great Synagogue was built between 1853 and 1855 according to the design of Austrian architects Johann Roman and August Schwendenwein. It was destroyed by the Nazis in 1939. The synagogue will also be the central theme of the program for the Jewish culture festival Štetl Fest, which will take place at the end of August.

"We plan to commemorate the Great Synagogue year-round, not just during the festival program. Among other things, we plan to publish an almanac in collaboration with the publishing house Větrné mlýny, for which we have invited several contemporary writers and poets to incorporate the theme of the Great Synagogue into their stories or poems. Members of the Placzko family, descendants of Rabbi Baruch Placzko, will also come to Štetl Fest, and during the festival, we would like to enliven the space and hold, for example, the closing concert there," said the chairwoman of the Štetl association and director of Štetl Fest Eva Yildizová.
