Damascus - In the fighting in Syria, which has lasted nearly four years, almost 300 rare cultural monuments have been destroyed or severely damaged. This is evident from satellite images of Syrian territory.
Among the destroyed sites are monuments listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. These include the districts of Aleppo and Damascus, as well as Palmyra and the Crusader castle Krak des Chevaliers.
The state of Syrian monuments was reported by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). According to them, 24 sites have been destroyed and 104 have been severely damaged. Another 85 sites suffered minor damage, and for 77 monuments, damage is possible, but cannot be precisely assessed.
UNITAR divided the observations into 18 zones; six of them contain monuments included on the UNESCO cultural heritage list. These include the old city of Aleppo, Busra in southern Syria, the center of Damascus, Palmyra, Krak, and villages from the ancient and Byzantine periods in northern Syria.
"What is happening there is sad for Syria and for the whole world. Humanity is losing a heritage that is thousands of years old," said UNITAR director Einar Bjorgo.
