Praha received a European grant for the reconstruction of Jiřího z Poděbrad Square

Prague - The Prague City Hall has received a European grant of approximately 69.4 million crowns for the reconstruction of Jiřího z Poděbrad Square, which began last year. An additional 17 million will come from the state budget. This is stated in the document approved by the city council today. The total cost of the reconstruction is about half a billion crowns including VAT, and the work is expected to be completed in the first half of next year.

Prague applied for funds from the Integrated Regional Operational Program in a call announced by the Ministry for Regional Development focused on green development; according to the approved document, the ministry allocated the grant in mid-April of this year. The funds will be used for building retention tanks for collecting rainwater and planting greenery.

The long-prepared reconstruction of the square began at the start of last year, and according to recent statements, it could be completed in the spring of next year. Workers have so far built two retention tanks and completed smaller sections of the square, and are currently working on the largest area in front of the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord. About 180 trees, which have already been planted, will be added to the square. The original fountain will be repaired, while the subway vent has been removed and replaced with a new one.

The reconstruction is now complete at the Jiřího z Poděbrad subway station, which began at the end of 2021 and was finished last July with the opening of a pair of elevators leading to the square at Vinohradská Street. In the long term, the city also plans to renovate Vinohradská Boulevard, and the city hall has been working on the project for a long time. It is still unclear when the work will begin.
