Milan (Italy) - The Milan Cathedral offered patrons from around the world the "adoption" of one of the gargoyles at the eaves of this significant historical building in an effort to raise 25 million euros (639 million crowns) for repairs.

The symbolic monument of the Lombard metropolis has a total of 136 gargoyles in a dilapidated state, reported AFP. Cathedral officials urged potential donors to send between ten and 100 euros (25 to 250 crowns) through the cathedral's website. However, to have their signature engraved on one of the gargoyles, an individual or company must provide at least 100,000 euros.
The construction of the cathedral, which towers over the main square of Milan, began in 1387. Its marble cladding suffers from the effects of weather and smog and must be restored every 70 to 80 years. Without the help of the citizens of Italy and other countries, according to the monument's caretakers, its restoration will fail during the current economic crisis in the country.
Since the operation began on October 18, according to AFP, there have been eight financial donations of 100,000 euros and several others of 10,000 euros to date.
Other monuments in Italy may face maintenance problems as well, where the government allocates 0.21 percent of the state budget to culture. According to Italy, half of the world's cultural heritage is located on the Apennine Peninsula and nearby islands.
