In the Mini Gallery at the Faculty of Architecture VUT in Brno, an exhibition by doctoral candidates Diana Hodulíková and Petr Preininger titled Purposely Invisible: From Temporary to Permanent was launched on Tuesday, January 7, at 5 PM. The exhibition, complemented by works from students of the Graphic Techniques course, presents and introduces the fundamental issues surrounding informal settlements in Africa and Asia. A guided tour with the authors will also take place on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at 4 PM.
About the Exhibition – The Report on Global Cities emphasizes that more than 20% of the world's population – approximately 1.6 billion people – live in informal settlements referred to as slums, shantytowns, or favelas. These structures are characterized by limited access to basic services, safe housing, and legal property rights. The exhibition maps the global phenomenon of informal settlements through a comprehensive methodology that includes interviews, literature reviews, photography, and mapping. By utilizing these methods, it describes the process of how informal settlements transition from temporary structures to permanent, formalized urban components. This research challenges the notion of cities without informal settlements and offers a way to understand them. The exhibition describes four case studies from Ethiopia, Egypt, the Philippines, and Nepal. The settlements are classified into four developmental stages based on spatial volume and materiality. The display demonstrates a fluid transformation with gradual changes and overlapping developmental phases of informal settlements, illustrating how informal settlements, often perceived as urban challenges, can play a transformative role in shaping cities and influencing their development. This perspective is intertwined with a global development strategy called the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Individual photographs or phases depicted in the exhibition do not represent a specific country but merely capture the situation in the respective area. In each country, multiple phases can be observed, including formal construction.
The research exhibition is complemented by works from students of the Graphic Techniques course under the guidance of acad. painter Milada Gabrielová from the Institute of Imaging, which reflect the theme of the four phases of informal development. The exhibition will run until the end of January 2025 and is open to the public.
