The young art exhibition revives the houses in the center of Prague for the sixth time – this time on Hybernská Street. During the nine days of November, the works of 65 studios from 18 schools can be seen, creating their site-specific installations across three floors of two buildings.
From November 10 to 19, 2017, students from higher arts schools across the Czech Republic will once again enliven the two buildings on Hybernská Street in Prague 1 as part of the event POKOJE VI. One of the most successful young art exhibitions in Prague is organized annually by the cultural center Containall. POKOJE VI will take place within the Kampus Hybernská, a joint project of FF UK and the City Hall of Prague, which has been operating at this address since the spring of this year.
Each of the 65 registered studios from 16 higher and 2 vocational schools is tasked with creating a site-specific installation in one of the rooms available in the buildings, meaning an installation that is defined by a designated space while also integrating the space (room) into the artwork. The exhibition is not curatorial or thematically defined; according to the founders of the cultural center Containall and the authors of the POKOJE concept, “the room is the only task with which students must cope, showing what they are currently working on and how they are able to deal with the designated space.”
POKOJE is the only event of its kind in the Czech Republic that presents the works of students from various corners of the country, providing them with the opportunity to draw inspiration from the creations of other exhibitors. This opportunity for meeting and considerable freedom in the task attracts more participants year by year: “This year, due to the enormous interest from studios, we expanded the exhibition into a second building and into the corridors and stairwells to give as many interested parties as possible the opportunity to present themselves,” explains David Skála, co-founder of Containall and POKOJE, about another specificity of this year's edition. The exhibition showcases the works of architecture students from several faculties, confronting fine arts with design, traditional materials with the latest technologies. “The diversity and different approaches of the individual studios are what make POKOJE the most interesting,” says David Skála from Containall. “We are glad that not only visitors but also exhibiting students have the opportunity through POKOJE to see how the same space can be artistically interpreted in a very diverse way,” he adds regarding the founding idea of POKOJE. The exhibition seeks to bring current events at higher art schools to the forefront even for secondary school students, whom the organizers invite to Hybernská, as this opportunity may help them choose their future studies.
The event is held with the support of the City Hall of Prague and the Prague 1 district.
Containall is a public benefit corporation that until this year operated two seasonal cultural centers in the heart of Prague: Stalin in Letná and Containall made from a shipping container located in Malá Strana. The seasonal activities of Containall, o.p.s., and one-off exhibitions like POKOJE have been expanding the cultural offering in the capital since 2013. This year, Containall began collaborating with FF UK on the form of Kampus Hybernská, where it participates in organizing events for the general public and co-creates a new social and cultural center in Prague. The future cultural and educational campus will connect students not only from art schools but also from humanities and other fields at Charles University in just a few days.
