Zlín – Zlín city council approved the announcement of an architectural-urban competition for the transformation of the space under the sports hall. The city, as the organizer, expects the creation of a multifunctional building complex that will benefit the city center and suitably complement its surroundings both functionally and spatially, spokesperson for the city hall Tomáš Melzer announced in a press release today. Among the considered plans are a veterans' museum, a training sports hall, residential buildings, and commercial spaces.
"We want to make the best use of the space under the sports hall. Our goal is to create a functional public space within this area that will contribute to the quality of life for the residents of the entire city as well as the Letná district. In this location, we would like to design areas for sports, culture, housing, and commerce to make the space attractive throughout the day. A modern parking house will also be located in the area. Given the importance of this space we chose the path of an architectural competition to select the truly highest quality solution," said the mayor's deputy Pavel Brada (ANO).
This is an area of 2.5 hectares. The area is bordered by Březnická, Mostní, U Zimního stadionu streets and the sports hall. "I am convinced that this location will significantly increase the attractiveness of the city center while also suitably complementing the upcoming reconstruction of the Big Cinema, which is in close proximity. Compared to the original assumption, sufficient time will be provided for the competitors so that the quantity and quality of the submitted proposals is not jeopardized. The deadline for submitting competition proposals is set for the end of February 2021," stated the mayor Jiří Korec (ANO). The results of the competition should be known by the end of March. The city council will decide on the outcome based on the recommendations of the jury.
"In the past, we purchased the area under the hall, thus securing a development area for the city of Zlín. Now it is time to think about its use and sensitively, and in context with the surroundings, to initiate an architectural competition," said the deputy mayor Miroslav Adámek (STAN).
