History of the Award
The National Award for Student Design was announced for the first time by the Design Cabinet CZ in 2008. It follows competitions organized by the Design Center of the Czech Republic until 2007, established and supported by the state since 1991. Students, primarily with school projects, also registered for the professional designers' competitions organized by the Design Center of the Czech Republic from the beginning and were evaluated in their own category. With the increasing number of secondary, higher, and university schools where design students are educated, the amount of submitted work also increased. Therefore, since 2004, the nationwide student competition became independent under the name Student Design. Young designers from all types of schools competed for the National Award for Student Design and for the Excellent Student Design and Good Student Design awards. When the Czech government and the Ministry of Trade and Industry dissolved the Design Center of the Czech Republic in 2007, all kinds of professional activities, including design competitions, ceased to exist. To ensure that the nationwide competition for young creators, the only one of its kind in Europe and probably in the world, did not also perish, the former Prague team of the Design Center of the Czech Republic established Design Cabinet CZ, which operates under the auspices of the Foundation for the Development of Architecture and Construction. Despite all the adverse circumstances and without financial support, Design Cabinet CZ announced the student competition for 2008 in collaboration with the Union of Visual Artists of the Czech Republic, the Union of Professional Designers of the Czech Republic, the Association of Secondary and Higher Professional Schools with Art and Art-technical Fields, and the civic association CZECHDESIGN CZ.

Present
For this year's edition of the National Award for Student Design, 120 students submitted 125 works from 16 secondary technical schools and higher vocational schools and from 16 universities. Students presented prototypes, models, accompanying posters, and portfolios for evaluation. A sixteen-member expert jury composed of the best Czech, Moravian, and Silesian designers (educators, studio leaders, art curators, chief designers of companies, or their owners with design education) selected 21 works for awards through several rounds of evaluation. One won the National Award for Student Design 2008, eight received Excellent Student Design 2008 awards, and twelve received the Good Student Design 2008 award. Additional special awards were given by the Architect magazine, Design Cabinet CZ, the Union of Professional Designers of the Czech Republic, the Union of Visual Artists of the Czech Republic, CZECHDESIGN.CZ, and the National Technical Museum. The competition and exhibition could take place thanks to the financial support of the companies Autodesk, Donlič Interior, Dvořák - slope mowers, Eta, mmcité, Tescoma, and material support from the companies Almex, Croy, Czech Centers, IKEA, Mr. Tester, the Foundation for the Development of Architecture and Construction, Polytrade CE, Red Bull, SSI Schäfer, and Student Agency.
The catalog was managed by the graphic studio Kolektiv, and the architecture of the exhibition was done by recent graduates of the AAAD in Prague, Roman Vrtiška and Vladimír Žák. The competition logo by Milan Sodoma was based on the assignment of the Higher Vocational School of Graphics in Prague, and the competition symbol was created by Jiří Janíček. The realization of the competition was carried out free of charge by two dozen volunteers from among designers, design enthusiasts, friends, and family members of Design Cabinet CZ.

The exhibition of awarded works will be open to the public from October 23 to November 14, 2008, at the exhibition spaces of the Foundation for the Development of Architecture and Construction, Václavské nám. 31, Prague 1. The exhibition is traveling (through the Czech Republic and abroad).
