DESIGN CABINET CZ replaces the abolished Design Center

After the dissolution of the seventeen-year-old Design Center of the Czech Republic and its two branches with galleries, a platform where designers, entrepreneurs, and design enthusiasts from both professional and lay communities could meet and connect has been lost in the Czech Republic. Thus, the source of knowledgeable information for the public, media, and various institutions has vanished, along with a place where designers, associations, clubs, groups, or companies could educate themselves and exhibit under expert curatorship and with the help of a team of educated experts.

Design Cabinet CZ strives to partially offer these lost services. It relies on non-governmental and private sources and seeks to obtain all available forms of funding.

Who are we?

Design Cabinet CZ is intended to serve as a service team for designers, entrepreneurs, companies, students, and schools of all levels and types. Currently, the working team consists of three employees, with plans to expand to a five-member group.
Design Cabinet CZ aims to collaborate with state institutions, non-governmental organizations, professional associations, clubs, groups, and companies, as well as individual designers and design enthusiasts.
Design Cabinet CZ was established on the platform of ABF - Foundation for the Development of Architecture and Building (Architecture & Building Foundation), which was founded in 1991. It is, among other things, the organizer of the Building of the Year competition (since 1992) and organizes lifelong education in the fields of architecture and construction.

What do we offer, what can we do, and what are our goals?

• A regular, everyday design service without unnecessary ostentation and populist claims that no institution in the Czech Republic has responsibly addressed design and its promotion until now.
• To promote design in all its forms with an emphasis on professional quality (not just on visual appeal and emotional impact).
• We want to connect the design community, not create artificial elites.
• We understand design as a democratic service for all layers of users (including marginalized ones). We want to support design for everyday life as well as for special occasions.
• We aim to map the current state of Czech design and maintain its archive.
• We can offer companies knowledgeable designers who will guarantee the design of quality products and support marketing strategies with media impact.
• We want to respect the internationally recognized ethical code of designers.

How and what do we want to achieve our goals?

• Through a publicly accessible design library expanded to include the fields of architecture and construction. In addition to printed magazines, books, publications, catalogs, and other materials, CDs and DVDs, computers with internet access will gradually be made available;
• Through education via lectures, seminars, workshops;
• By organizing design competitions for designers and companies;
• Through non-commercial and commercial design exhibitions in the Czech Republic and abroad;
• By organizing special projects;
• Maintaining databases necessary for action and promotion (designers, architects, entrepreneurs, companies, schools, interested parties);
• As a mediation service between the worlds of business and design;
• By preparing PR materials and media campaigns;
• Offering opportunities for meetings of design, architectural, artistic, and other associations (meetings, annual gatherings, general meetings, conventions, etc.);
• By organizing trips to significant world trade fairs and design exhibitions;
• Through film screenings about design and architecture;
• By hosting social events (awards ceremonies, fashion shows, festive evenings, etc.);
• By fulfilling everything that the professional design public desires and is feasible within our means.
