In Ostrava, the construction of a bridge over the Ostravice will begin for 274 million crowns excluding VAT

Ostrava – Construction of a bridge on Na Karolině Street will begin in Ostrava on Monday, which is set to become another landmark of the city. The construction will replace the bridge structure over the Ostravice River and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The construction of the new connection will cost 274 million crowns without VAT. The city hall spokesperson Gabriela Pokorná announced this to the press today.

Due to the construction, drivers must prepare for traffic complications, as the current bridge will be closed to all traffic, which will be redirected through detours. "It is necessary to remind everyone of the nearly emergency state of the existing bridge structures, which we must address with safety in mind. In connection with the aforementioned safety, considering the long-term lifespan and future development of the area, we decided on the complete demolition of the bridge and its replacement with a new one," said Deputy Mayor for Investments and Transport Břetislav Riger (Ostravak).

The design of the bridge was proposed by architect Roman Koucký, who has been engaged in the design of such structures for many years. Some of his most famous works include the Troja Bridge in Prague and the Mariánský Bridge in Ústí nad Labem.

A characteristic element of the new bridge connecting Moravian and Silesian Ostrava is the so-called fire spouts, located on both sides of the bridge. "In combination with festive lighting, they will allow for the creation of light and fire effects during significant events. This motif symbolically refers to the industrial tradition of the region and its steelmaking history," stated Riger.

Another feature will be the reliefs of the emblems of the boroughs on the bridge piers of both banks and high masts with flags of these historical boroughs. According to the deputy, the bridge should not only serve as a transport link but also as a symbolic gateway between the two traditional parts of the city.

"The new bridge will connect the 'two' Ostravas, Moravian and Silesian. Each has a different character. To make the new bridge a symbol of their meeting, each has the same part of the asymmetrical load-bearing structure of the bridge, which symbolically meets over the river," added Koucký.

Two bridge structures will replace one bridge, which will be narrower and shorter. The project also includes the modification of connecting roads over a length of approximately 600 meters, the reconstruction of three intersections, including transforming two of them into roundabouts, and the construction of new pathways for pedestrians and cyclists.

"Six bidders applied for the competition. The winning bid amounted to 274 million crowns without VAT, which is approximately 67 million crowns less than the originally estimated value of the contract," Riger added.

In the first phase of the work until May 24, the demolition of the old bridge and the foundation of the new one are planned, while the actual bridge and further planned modifications are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
