Prague - The Prague City Hall has completed the study of the promenade with a park planned instead of the railway line between Vršovice and Zahradní Město, which will cease operation after the modernization of the corridor. As Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr (Praha Sobě) told reporters today, construction could start in 2022 and finish two years later, costing between 200 and 300 million crowns. A similar project is also planned as part of the modernization of the line to the airport and to Kladno.
The line running through Strašnice, including the stop, is expected to cease operation in December, when it will be replaced by a newly built four-track corridor with new stops Eden and Zahradní Město. The new promenade, according to Scheinherr, is intended for walking and recreation, while also connecting Vršovice and Strašnice for pedestrians and cyclists. The deputy mentioned that the City Hall already has documentation for a land-use decision, for which it will apply. The necessary land is planned to be exchanged by the city with the Railway Administration (SŽ) for other plots.
The promenade will consist of two strips, one four meters wide for cyclists and rollerbladers, and the other 3.2 meters wide for pedestrians. Between them will be just under a meter of greenery, tartan, or original tracks. Other railway elements will also be preserved on the promenade. "Along the path, original parts of the track bed, lighting towers, sleepers, and signals will be visible. A historic stone underpass from the 19th century, a riveted bridge from 1918, and a pedestrian bridge near the Prague - Strašnice stop from the 1930s, as well as part of the platform from the second half of the 20th century, will remain along the promenade," Scheinherr stated.
Architect and chief coordinator of the study Tomáš Cach added that the promenade will include three bridges, one at the new railway stop in Eden, one at V Korytech street, and the largest over Průběžná street. There will be several areas designated for leisure activities on the promenade and in the surrounding park, such as near Botič, near the Vlasta housing estate, at Eden on the site of the former Strašnice stop, or at the viewpoint over Zahradní Město.
According to Scheinherr, a similar project is also being considered by the City Hall as part of the planned modernization of the line to the airport. "There will be an abandonment of the current railway bed on the way to Kladno, and therefore a project we call the Kladno railway path should emerge," he explained. He added that in this case, there won't be as much space available as in Strašnice, so it will rather be a path for pedestrians and cyclists without an adjoining park, although there will also be places for recreation.
The four-track line being built by SŽ between Hostivař and the main station is reportedly about two-thirds complete. The project is expected to cost 5.4 billion crowns, with more than 80 percent to be funded by European funds.
