Cheb – The reconstruction of the Dominican monastery begins in Cheb. The long-prepared reconstruction will last two years. The medieval building in the city center is to be transformed into a facility for the Cheb basic art school, which is already lacking space for its activities, said the deputy mayor of Cheb, Pavel Pagáč (VOK), to ČTK. According to him, the construction site has already been handed over to the contractor, who will start preparing the construction.

The company ISSO - Engineering Constructions Sokolov won the tender with an offer of nearly 144 million crowns excluding VAT. The project estimate was approximately 50 million higher.

The construction works will also include restoration work on the paintings and small stone elements found in the building. At the same time, there will be a change in heating technology and electricity generation, with the city placing its own cogeneration unit in the building. A larger part of the work on the reconstruction of the monastery pertains to the interior of the buildings in connection with the change of their use and the complete replacement of utility networks. Inappropriate additions to the historical structure, unsuitable doors, and floors will be removed. A new elevator shaft will be added, leading to a new reinforced concrete staircase.

A significant alteration to the external appearance of the monastery will be the reinstatement of burnt ceramic roofing, known as beaver tail tiles, on the roofs of buildings B and C. On one of the buildings, the roofing will be replaced with a new copper one. The builders will also repair the façade plasters. The windows will be double wooden. The main courtyard, which leads to the entrance from Jánské náměstí, will be newly paved.

The reconstruction of the historic monastery is also related to the takeover of the adjacent St. Wenceslas Church. The city will connect both buildings structurally, and they will be able to be used together. The most significant intervention at St. Wenceslas Church will be the repair of the roof structure. For Cheb, this is one of the largest investments in recent years, which is also why the construction is divided into two years. This year, Cheb will operate according to the approved budget with revenues and expenditures of 1.76 billion crowns.
