Krnov – The repair of the Municipal Theatre in Krnov, which was damaged by a flood in September 2024, is set to be completed in the first half of December. The theatre is expected to reopen to the public in January. The opening program will also include a performance by local amateur actors. Work is in full swing, with craftsmen finishing the interior structures and installing technical equipment. This was reported today by the city spokesperson Dita Círová.

The excavated floors and partitions in the damaged parts of the building have been replaced with new structures, which workers are now plastering and tiling. A landing for distribution cabinets and other technology has been created on the first floor. The equipment, which was previously in the basement, is being moved to a higher floor due to the risk of further flooding. "The repairs also include measures to prevent moisture from penetrating the structures. The restoration concerns areas affected by water as well as floors and structures where further moisture spread needs to be prevented," she stated.

The flood primarily damaged the basement areas. These included dressing rooms for performers, the orchestra pit, sanitary facilities, distribution cabinets for high-voltage and low-voltage electrical installations, and backup power sources. Cable routes with fire resistance were also submerged and need to be completely replaced. The facilities for visitors and staff were also damaged.

Water also reached the auditorium. The damaged carpet will be replaced, and the floor will be adjusted. During the flood, six rows of damaged seats had to be removed. According to previously published data, the repair of the theatre is estimated to cost around 24 million crowns excluding VAT. The city received a ninety percent state grant from the Natural Disaster 1 program for the project. According to information from April, the work was supposed to be completed by the end of the year.

The Municipal Theatre building was constructed in 1928 according to the design of the Viennese architect Leo Kammel, a student of Jan Kotěra. It is considered a unique example of expressionist theatre architecture in the Czech lands. It also underwent extensive reconstruction in 2022.
