Rigips, s.r.o., brings a new TopTherm system for ensuring thermal and sound insulation above rafters for pitched roofs. It is primarily designed for energy-efficient family homes, i.e., generally for low-energy and passive buildings.

For pitched roofs, placing the thermal insulation above the rafters has many advantages. However, existing above-rafter structures did not allow for the placement of sufficient thickness of thermal insulation, which is essential for low-energy or passive houses.
Based on monitoring and evaluating reference projects of energy-efficient buildings, it is clear that for these houses, it is necessary to place:
  • 200 – 400 mm of thermal insulation in floors and walls,
  • 300 - 500 mm of thermal insulation in roofs.
Advantages of the TopTherm system:
  • Simple and reliable application. Simple (and thus reliable) application of thermal insulation for pitched roofs in practically any thickness.
  • High load-bearing capacity of thermal insulation. The high compressive strength of EPS ensures minimal deformation under load even at large insulation thicknesses.
  • Possible application even in adverse weather. The low moisture absorption of polystyrene allows for installation even in poor weather conditions.
  • No thermal bridges in the structure. The thermal insulation layer is continuous, without the usual thermal bridges from rafters, etc.
  • Visible structure inside. The system allows for architecturally interesting and elegant visibility of the rafters inside.
  • Easy and safe placement of vapor barriers. Installing a vapor barrier on an ideally flat surface is easy and reliable. Joints can be easily and effectively glued. Complicated sealing of the vapor barrier around brackets, etc., is eliminated.
  • Rafter without condensation. The main wooden components of the rafter are located outside the area of theoretical condensation and are easily accessible for inspection, which supports the long-term reliability of the roof.
  • Adequate ventilation of the roof covering. The roof tile covering is placed on traditional battens, ensuring adequate ventilation under the covering.
  • Reliable and easy surface anchoring. Anchoring the system on the surface is done with pre-assembled stainless steel rods of small diameter, ensuring maximum reliable anchoring against wind suction. The stainless steel material and small diameter of the rod minimize the thermal bridge generated and ensure virtually unlimited lifespan.
  • Anchors for transferring sloped load components. The inclined load component from the covering is reliably transferred to the rafters by anchors in the area of the eaves and gutter. A simple anchor connection is used for all thicknesses of thermal insulation.

Typical composition of the TopTherm system for energy-efficient buildings:

Note: At the level of the lower layer of thermal insulation (6), electrical wiring can be performed, or a supporting auxiliary structure can be placed, for instance for Rigidur fiberboards, without significant damage to the vapor barrier.
Instead of hanging battens (13), a full surface boarding can be applied for roofing materials such as asphalt shingles, split slate, etc.
