As every year, the most important furniture fair of the year takes place in the Italian capital around mid-April. This year it celebrates its 50th anniversary, and the celebrations are expected to be grand. Over 1,300 furniture manufacturers will showcase their products in the new fair space designed by the renowned architectural duo Dorian and Massimiliano Fuksas in the RHO district. The accompanying program will traditionally take place in showrooms throughout Milan, at the Triennale, and in the Tortona area, which will also undergo a transformation this year. Here’s a little preview of what will really be worth seeing.
Horm Pavilion 16, Stand A35
This company was founded in 1989 by designers and architects who wanted to create an alternative to companies producing mass-produced furniture. They established a company that handcrafts unique pieces of furniture in limited editions in a small factory in northern Italy. The designers include well-known names such as Toyo Ito, Steven Holl, Karim Rashid, Álvaro Siza, Mario Bellini, Carlo Cumini, Luciano Marson, and others. All pieces are meticulously planned down to the last screw, made from quality materials, executed with precision, and always have something extra! Perhaps the most famous collection is Ripples by renowned Japanese architect Toyo Ito. It consists of benches, chairs, bar stools, and tables, created from plywood glued from five types of veneers, which feature circular recesses. Toyo Ito also applied the idea of using plywood from various types of wood for the construction of the no less elegant Sendai shelving system. Steven Holl opted for a slender 2mm thick sandwich plywood once used for making airplane wings, into which various holes are cut. This material is very load-bearing, and therefore a table from the Riddled collection does not require any additional supporting structure. Other amazing furniture pieces manufactured by this company include the slender 3.6-meter-long Lux table from the workshop of Carlo Cumini and Luciano Marson, a shelving unit that you essentially do not need any tools to assemble, '93-'08 by Carlo Cumini, folding tables with atypical fittings, ...
Self-supporting living wall units, foldable exercise machines, distinctive children's rooms, ... are the domain of the Italian family company Tumidei, which has more than fifty years of furniture manufacturing tradition. For years, Tumidei has exclusively used environmentally friendly materials that comply with European standards. These include eco-panels using low formaldehyde adhesives and water-based paints, which are classified as non-toxic and do not emit toxic residues into indoor environments. Their greatest strength is self-supporting living wall units that can also be used to divide living spaces. Another prominent product of this company bears the technical name Folding; it can be used for bases and bodies or shelves of great thickness. This special manufacturing process involves cutting and then bending the panel at a 90° angle, which is repeated until a "simple box" is formed, achieving absolute continuity of veneer and a clean edge. The Folding system can also be used for self-supporting partitioning shelving walls. Both systems can be combined with each other and can be complemented with cabinets featuring sinusoidal curves. All the load-bearing elements of the children's rooms of this company have a steel construction, ensuring high durability and variability of the children's room solutions with the possibility of combination with different types of constructions and various surface colorations. In 2010, this company introduced a new collection of rounded load-bearing elements that contribute to greater safety for children. The company is very flexible and accommodating to customers. Custom manufacturing is standard, along with different types of lighting and electrical installations integrated into furniture constructions. Notably, they also offer digital large-format printing on furniture components according to the customer’s own design. Another specialty of this company is the multifunctional exercise machine X-fit, which has many functions including a DVD player with a screen and can conveniently be folded into any wardrobe. At the Tumidei stand, products from the company Momenti, which specializes in manufacturing interior accessories and mirrors, will also be displayed. Momenti collaborates with Italian artists, and their products are handmade. This company also offers custom manufacturing for selected products.
Erba Pavilion 12, Stand B27, Zona Tortona - Roses&Chic, via Forcella 13
The products of Erba can be simply and aptly described as "in the sign of luxury." They are made from high-quality upholstery materials (30 types of fabrics, 8 types of leathers), and all have either a steel or wooden frame or a combination of both. Even the seating and support areas are not skimped on. Layers of various types of fillings (polyurethane, polyester fibers, feathers, or Dacron) are used in different thicknesses and amounts depending on the shape and intended use of the specific model. The company is open to client changes, so it is possible to adjust the firmness or softness of a given sofa or armchair as per the client’s wishes, or to replace feathers with another material if there is an allergy, or to use the client's own fabric for upholstering the selected set. As an alternative to removable covers for some of its models, Erba has introduced the Shabby Chic collection – this collection of linen throws complements the interior atmosphere and gives it a dreamy quality.
One of the oldest Italian furniture manufacturers and the founder of the Fuori Salone philosophy (exhibitions directly in city showrooms and accompanying events) will, as every year, only exhibit in its own spaces. The company is most renowned for producing what are now design icons and collectible pieces of furniture. Here you will find works by designers and architects such as Giulio Cappellini, Shigeru Ban, Nendo, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Tom Dixon, Rodolfo Dordoni, A. G. Fronzoni, Alessandro Mendini, Jasper Morrison, Claudio Silvestrin, and many others. The company also produces living room units and wardrobes.
