Smíchov is a place where life never sleeps – a pulsating center of Prague 5, where major traffic arteries intersect, including cars, trams, and the metro. It is not surprising that the streets here are often flooded with omnipresent noise. One of the busiest intersections in the capital city is the connection of Plzeňská, Kartouzská, and Mozartova streets. It is here that the unique residential building project My Mozart was created by the developer division IP Polná, designed by the studio A.LT ARCHITEKTI v. o. s.
The original plan to build a hotel at this strategic location was thwarted by the COVID pandemic, which turned investment plans towards the construction of a residential building. The result is 150 thoughtfully designed small fully equipped apartments, each approximately 20 m² in size. All apartments have already found their new owners, and a large portion of the apartments is used by their owners for temporary living in Prague. The structure of the building is based on a reinforced concrete skeleton, which is placed in a pit where special rubber vibration isolation panels are distributed around the walls for vibration reasons. The fact that the building is located at a very busy intersection also influenced the careful approach to solving construction acoustics. To enhance acoustic comfort, even the inter-apartment wall was designed for acoustic comfort, consisting of five layers of drywall. All internal partitions, including those between individual apartments, were solved with dry construction, contributing to quick realization and flexible alterations.
Since the investor relies on the properties and quality of aluminum windows, it was clear from the outset what type of window profiles would be preferred. Premium quality and properties of Schüco aluminum window systems, specifically the AWS 75.SI+ type from DAFE - PLAST Jihlava, s.r.o., were chosen. This system excels not only in top thermal insulation parameters and innovative central sealing but also in maximum sound insulation. The window panes consist of special acoustic safety double glazing with a Ug value of 1.0 W/m²K and an Rw of up to 46 dB. In this composition, a special ECLAZ ONE coating is also used, which ensures high daylight transmission and optimal solar gains (solar factor of the entire double glazing up to 50%). The glass meets the safety function of a railing according to ČSN 74 3305. The profiles were surface-treated in elegant shades of gray RAL 7038 and RAL 9007. The delivery of the windows also included glass railings placed in side profiles of Schüco.
As mentioned, one of the key themes of the entire realization was acoustics – and a major topic for the acoustic protection of residents was the filling of building openings, i.e., windows and doors. Before the installation of the windows, a 24-hour noise measurement was conducted, based on which parameters were set for the individual parts of the building – whether commercial spaces, the courtyard, or the main façade. The noise reduction values of the glazing used range from 36 to 46 dB. The excellent acoustic parameters are also aided by the fact that a significant portion of the windows are fixed, yet when the windows are closed, the surrounding noise stays outside – it is truly quiet inside the apartments. Schüco ADS 75.SI entrance doors, also from DAFE - PLAST Jihlava, s.r.o., equipped with barrier-free access, a five-point electric lock, and Schüco Safematic security elements, complement the high standard of the entire project.
The actual installation of the windows was a logistical challenge – traffic at the busy intersection did not allow for significant restrictions, and access to the courtyard was also limited. Large-format glass was installed with considerable help from a crane, and the largest glass pane weighed an incredible 840 kg. The success of the entire operation thus depended on precise timing of transportation, handling, and sidewalk occupation.
The My Mozart residence has thus harmoniously integrated into the changing Smíchov, which has gradually become the commercial-cultural heart of Prague 5. The uniqueness of the project is emphasized by an artistic installation by sculptor Prokop Bartoníček. On the roof of the building, where there is a terrace for the residents, he erected ten-meter masts – “the new twenty-five towers of Prague” – which reflect sunlight during the day and create an impressive geometric abstraction at night. My Mozart thus offers not only exceptional living but also an inspiring combination of architecture, technology, and art.
