Interview with the Czech design duo LLEV
Most retailers prepare for the Christmas season as it is the most important part of the year. This rule also applies to design. In the Czech Republic, design is seen more as a luxury and a bold accessory for the home. Electronics, clothing, and toys are generally chosen as Christmas gifts. If someone decides to give a home accessory, they typically choose from classic cut glass or browse through the household goods department looking for wine glasses or pots.
DESIGN CORSO has many clients among the middle class who tend to arrange their home furnishings rather conservatively. One factor is the lack of education regarding aesthetics and the appreciation of craftsmanship. Customers also realize that they must use a new accessory for a long time and cannot afford to replace it frequently. This results in hesitation and a tendency toward traditional solutions. The purchase of an authorial product with contemporary design is not common and is more associated with name days than with Christmas.
Therefore, DESIGN CORSO is coming up with an unconventional invitation to a pre-Christmas presentation of design and products. On Thursday, December 22, a meeting will take place at the Karlin showroom with the design duo LLEV from 12 PM to midnight. The meeting with designers aims to enhance shopping and bring a friendly element to furniture and authorial design shopping.
The LLEV studio is preparing unconventional wooden Christmas ornaments made from veneer, so visitors can take home a small original made to their wishes. This small gift will be given to customers with every purchase from DESIGN CORSO. For purchases over 5000 CZK, customers will receive chocolate produced by the Fair Trade project, which provides jobs to people in developing countries. The range of Fair Trade food products, such as coffee and chocolate, found at DESIGN CORSO is exclusively made from organic ingredients.

How do you view your diploma works with the passage of time?
Eva: The sink has been exhibited for over a year at the Laufen Bathrooms Gallery, where I currently work, so I have the opportunity to observe it almost daily along with customers. It’s interesting to hear their honest opinions and reactions without them knowing the author is standing before them. Such an experience can only be brought by reality itself.
Marcel: My grandmother says, "Do every job you do with love!" This belief perfectly captures the feelings with which my final work was created. Its purpose was to seamlessly connect with the haptic sensations that my studies allowed me to develop. Being able to continue my path in the company of good people at the Atelier Glass was truly significant for me.
How did LLEV leap from the student environment to the real world?
The assignments life has given us so far are and always will be like school exercises.
You just shoot with live ammunition, and if you miss, you fall to the ground as in a duel. This fight is interesting even in the event of defeat. We learn to listen, we learn like small children who already know how to write, but will learn to read for their entire lives.
In the past year, you prepared two collections of thick-shaped glass in collaboration with Jablonex Group. What brought you to this material?
Marcel: I previously avoided glass. To me, it was just a needless collection of glass animals I was forbidden to play with. And when it came to making a decision at fourteen, I vehemently rejected studying anything like that. Until the moment I entered the building of the Železný Brod Industrial School.
That building engulfs you and won’t let go.
Is LLEV preparing any surprises?
We are working on a secret project for our main client.
And we will let ourselves be surprised by the result. We will only reveal that these will be products that will please people born in the years: 1948, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1994, 1995, 1996… etc.
What is characteristic of your studio?
Love for nature. Which is true. Natural materials are the cornerstone for us,
which determines the form of our ideas. Our main goal is to understand the material and use it correctly.
This way, the Bretagne slate coasters and the Mimy and Fido vases for the ŽBS Concept collection were created.
How do you spend Christmas? Are you still in the clutches of design at Christmas? Do you bake designer cookies?
We spend Christmas like ordinary people. With family and the best vanilla rolls that need no shape innovation. They are perfect.
DESIGN CORSO is also coming up with Christmas opening hours during the last Advent week. From December 19 to 23, it will be open from 10 AM to 10 PM. On the day of the Christmas event, Thursday, December 22, it will be open until midnight. Throughout the week, there will be a 5% discount on the entire range.
The special Christmas opening hours cater mainly to customers who cannot manage to shop for gifts during the day. For them, shopping through the newly opened e-shop called estyle could also be an ideal solution. At www.estyle.cz, you will find the entire range of DESIGN CORSO from small home accessories to chairs and sofas.
