Reconstructed roof covering of the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary in Prague-Strašnice, now with PREFA folded shingles.
The modern church of the Roman Catholic parish of Strašnice was built only between 1992 and 1994. The shape of the church's roof is quite atypical; it is a four-sided pyramid with one open side and the roofing material is designed on three sides, which are treated as a hyperbolic paraboloid. The main reason for the decision to reconstruct the complicated roof was the continuously increasing water infiltration into the roofing structure.

In the years when the church was being built, there were very few quality roofing materials available on the Czech market. Among quality roofing materials, the originally used bituminous shingle with granules certainly did not belong. Its interconnection and waterproofing was problematic even at that time, and roofs covered with this material rarely function well and experience serious problems after just a few years. Additionally, the granules on the exposed side were highly appealing to Prague pigeons, which could have also been one of the reasons for the water infiltration into the building.

The parish, backed by the Archdiocese of Prague, and the architect were very keen to maintain the expression and color of the structure. However, after great disappointment with the previous material, they placed a completely different and much more demanding emphasis on quality. The aluminum roofing product PREFA Aluminiumprodukte meets all the aforementioned requirements thanks to its high variability, maintenance-free nature, and a 40-year warranty on the quality of the material and color. Moreover, it does not strain the environment and is resistant to all weather influences.

The fact that this is not a simple type of roofing reconstruction is demonstrated by the fact that the eaves edge has an uneven height around its perimeter. Its foundation, combined with the laying of individual roofing shingles in stripes of two different colors, was not simple. The installation of the PREFA interlocking shingles in light gray P.10 and atypical gray over an area of more than 1000 m2 was carried out by the Hradec company Pario s.r.o. The completion date for the reconstruction was set for the end of September 2012.
