Teaching of basic and advanced methods of two-dimensional and three-dimensional computer design takes place at the Faculty of Architecture at the Czech Technical University in Prague using applications from Autodesk.
Autodesk continues to strengthen its support for higher education in the Czech Republic. Students at the Faculty of Architecture at CTU in Prague will utilize 240 new licenses of the latest Autodesk applications in the fields of architecture, construction, and digital content creation in the new semester. Professional training on these technologies for high school and university educators will also take place at the same faculty.
The Faculty of Architecture at CTU in Prague is regularly attended by around 1200 students. The education, which does not overlook the contribution of new information technologies in architectural practice, includes mandatory courses "CAD I" and "CAD II". In these courses, students get acquainted with the basic philosophy of working in CAD systems using the latest version of AutoCAD (about 250 students), and in the following semester, students learn to work on creating complex 3D models and visualizations in the 3ds Max program (again for the entire year, about 250 students). The education continues with other elective and compulsory elective courses focusing on specific tasks and incorporating additional applications for architectural design. The main subject - architectural creation - allows students to choose which software (or combination thereof) suits them best.
In preparation for the new school year, faculty representatives have developed a new teaching concept and also decided on the purchase of a larger number of new licenses of the most suitable software. The choice fell on Autodesk and its solutions, which have a long-standing tradition in the Czech Republic and also a very strong position among architects and civil engineers. Among the 240 licenses, systems for architectural and construction design Autodesk AutoCAD Revit Series 9 (more than half of the total licenses) and Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2007 were purchased, as well as Autodesk 3ds MAX 9 for comprehensive general 3D modeling and visualization preparation, and Autodesk Maya 8.0. The delivery of Autodesk solutions was conducted through AB Studio, which has long cooperated with the Faculty of Architecture on the implementation and expansion of Autodesk solutions.
“Currently, Autodesk products are used in most design offices in the Czech Republic - for this reason, this software is incorporated into education so that students can apply themselves better in practice. We currently consider 3ds Max the most optimal software for design and presentation, and Autodesk Architectural Desktop in conjunction with CADKON DT+ represents a very suitable solution in the field of architectural and engineering drawings, while we consider Revit and Maya as the software of the future,” says architect Dana Matějovská from the Model Projecting Cabinet at FA CTU in Prague.
“The partnership between Autodesk and the Faculty of Architecture is very beneficial for the easy implementation of high-end software equipment into education and research in the academic environment,” adds Petr Klán, manager of software solutions at FA CTU. Additionally, the collaboration between the Prague university and Autodesk is developing in another direction - within the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University, a training center for Autodesk solutions for high school and university educators has been established. The first training (Autodesk Architectural Desktop) is currently taking place in September, and further products are planned to be included in this program in the future.

Architectural education at the Czech Technical University has a deep tradition. Its foundations were laid as early as the mid-18th century when the teaching of architecture began in connection with civil engineering, viewed as a synthesis of art, science, and technology. With the aim of utilizing the most modern technologies and methods in practice, the education of new architects continues to this day. Evidence that this direction is correct is the fact that the FA CTU enjoys a good reputation not only in the Czech Republic but also in Europe and the world.
