The Institute of Concrete and Masonry Structures of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Brno University of Technology, in collaboration with the Czech Concrete Society ČSSI and under the patronage of ČKAIT Brno, invites you to a seminar:
MEMBRANE ROOFS MADE OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE
The seminar will be held on September 11, 2007, at 15:00 in building D3, lecture hall 182, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Veveří 95, Brno. The aim of the seminar is to draw architects' and engineers' attention to membrane structures made of prestressed concrete. These structures can be seamlessly assembled from prefabricated components suspended on a cable net. The prestressing induced by cables running in the joints between the components ensures sufficient stiffness and long-term durability of the structures. Results of the grant projects of the Ministry of Industry FD-K/092 "Ecological and Aesthetic Composite Bridge Structures" and FI-IM/185 "New Economical Structures of High-Strength Concrete" and solutions from the project 1M6840770001 of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports within the activities of the research center CIDEAS will be presented at the seminar. Membrane roofs made of prestressed concrete have been designed around the world since the inception of prestressed concrete. Unfortunately, in recent years they have been overlooked. However, recent implementations in Portugal, which have received numerous engineering and architectural awards, confirm that these structures are still modern, economical, and can enrich our environment architecturally. As part of the grant solution, membrane structures of simple and double curvature were studied. The double curvature structure, based on the solution of the reconstructed Berlin Congress Hall, is being verified on a model of the structure built at a scale of 1:10.
