Alex Jelínek

Meet the extraordinary life and artistic journey of architect, sculptor, designer, pilot, and cyclist Alex (Aleš) Jelínek (1925–2007). It led from his hometown of Hradec Králové through Prague to Melbourne. This creator excelled not only in the versatility of his talent but also in his brave story of escape from totalitarian Czechoslovakia. His personal and professional life is closely connected with the outstanding Australian painter Lina Bryans (1909–2000). We will look not only at his sculptures and innovative building projects but above all at his opus magnum – the house for philosopher Roger Benjamin in Canberra, which immediately after its completion became an iconic building of Australian modern architecture.
