Prague – Prague 10 plans to announce an architectural competition for the reconstruction of Svatopluk Čech Square in Vršovice. This was communicated to ČTK in a press release by the spokesperson for the city district, Ján Bruno Tropp. The city hall is also preparing a survey regarding the adjustments among local residents, which will be launched in mid-September on the district's website.

According to the mayor of Prague 10, Martin Valovič, the square with the dominant St. Wenceslas Church designed by architect Josef Gočár shows signs of wear and a long-term lack of conceptual care. "The surfaces and materials used are becoming outdated, and the entire area does not fulfill its potential – both for everyday use and for hosting cultural or community events," he stated.

He added that the city district is therefore striving for the revitalization of the square, before which it wants to collect suggestions from local residents in collaboration with architects. "In nearly a hundred years since the square was established, social needs and the way public space is used have changed. Prague 10 is now trying to actively adapt to these changes and invite the public to a common debate," the mayor said.

Svatopluk Čech Square, better known as Čechovo náměstí, is located around St. Wenceslas Church between Moskevská and Slovinská streets. The church was built between 1929 and 1930 on the site of a former cemetery according to the design of architect Josef Gočár. It is considered one of the most significant functionalist buildings in the Czech Republic.
