The lecture and workshop Just Space! will focus on public space

The architectural magazine ERA21, in collaboration with the Austrian Cultural Forum in Prague and the Faculty of Architecture at Czech Technical University in Prague, is organizing a lecture, workshop, and discussion on the topic:

“Just Space! (In)just, or simply just space?”

The main speakers and discussants will be Austrian architect Gabu Heindl and Petr Šourek, founder of the agency CorruptTour.

The lecture will take place on Wednesday, May 2 at 6:00 PM at the Faculty of Architecture, Czech Technical University in Prague (lecture hall Krejcar, Thákurova 9).

The lectures will be simultaneously interpreted from/to German, and the subsequent discussion moderated by the editor-in-chief of ERA21, Osamu Okamura, will be conducted in English.

A follow-up all-day field workshop will be held on Thursday, May 3 at 9:30 AM. Participants will gather at the Austrian Cultural Forum in Prague, Jungmannovo náměstí 18, Prague 1. The workshop will be conducted in English.

The lecture and workshop will focus on those moments in public space that often lead to conflict. The dual meaning of the English word “just” in the title “Just Space” was chosen deliberately: When and where is urban architecture “just” – that is, fair, impartial? To what extent can a building be a witness to or a result of an unfair planning process or be unfair in itself? Or also: Until when does a certain place remain “just” one of many places? When is “just” used in the sense of “only,” while a certain place can be fair or unfair entirely independently of its architecture? During the workshop, specific sites in Prague will be visited in collaboration with consultants from the Praguewatch association, which will be discussed afterwards.

Gabu Heindl is an architect, urban planner, and author of professional articles and publications. She lives in Vienna and studied architecture in Vienna, Tokyo, and Princeton. She has taught and lectured at the Technical University of Delft, the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam, the AA School of Architecture in London, Städelschule in Frankfurt, and the Technical University in Graz. Currently, she works at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Her extensive publication activity includes articles in the Journal of Architectural Education (US), Umbau, derive, GAM (AT), and archis (NL), and she has also published numerous books. She is a member of the board of the Austrian Society for Architecture (ÖGFA). In her practice, based on deep theoretical knowledge, she focuses on architectural concepts and implementations of public cultural and social buildings, as well as urban research projects.
