JIŘÍ AND BĚLA KOLÁŘOVI: TODAY'S BALANCE

A meeting focused on the work of two strong personalities and life partners, who spent part of their lives in Vršovice. Poet / artist / philosophical theorist Jiří Kolář (1914-2002) was among the most influential figures in the post-war Czech scene with his opinions and attitudes, while the intimate work of Běla Kolářová (1923-2010) and her remarkable human qualities have only recently begun to receive proper appreciation. Their creative experiments have become a shared and still inspiring asset of European post-war culture. The inquiry into the common cultural foundations and the mutual creative dialogue of both partners is once again relevant today.

The lecture will be delivered by doc. Marie Klimešová, an art historian and curator who works at the Institute of Art History at Charles University in Prague. Recently, she prepared exhibitions such as "Years in Days. Czech Art 1945-57" (Municipal Library, GHMP, 2010) and "Things of Art. Things of the Time. Group 42" (West Bohemian Gallery in Pilsen, 2011). She has long been engaged with the work of the Kolář couple and recently presented them in a solo exhibition at the Krobath Gallery in Vienna as part of the Curated by project (ongoing until June 12).

The lecture series at Café Sladkovský focuses on modern and contemporary art, architecture, public space, and significant personalities who lived/lives in Vršovice. They are complemented by video art evenings held in collaboration with VVP AVU.
