Sarah Cowles
Ruderal

In the next lecture of the KRA/JINÁ II series, landscape architect Sarah Cowles, founder of the Georgian-American studio Ruderal based in Tbilisi, will present her work. The studio focuses on landscape architecture, urbanism, and land planning with an emphasis on ecological sustainability, local context, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The team consists of experts in architecture, ecological planning, horticulture, heritage conservation, rural development, and public participation.

In Georgia, the studio is currently working on projects such as the reclamation of the urban forest Mtatsminda in Tbilisi, the landscape design for the Sighnaghi Panorama hotel, and the development of the Kvareli Lake Resort area in the Kakheti region. It is also long-term engaged in research and revitalization of landscapes in the broader Caucasus region – for example, ecological restoration of the Kvirila River gorge in the mining town of Chiatura, adaptation of former limestone quarries in Kavtiskhevi, or the protection of landscape heritage along the historic railway line Boržomi–Bakuriani.
