In the second part of the lecture series dedicated to the movers of Czech architecture, acclaimed artist and curator Michal Škoda will speak. He has been leading the Gallery of Contemporary Art and Architecture in the House of Art in České Budějovice for twenty years. In his presentation, which will take place on April 25, 2018, at 6 PM in the small hall of Moving Station in Plzeň, he will describe how this institution mediates top domestic and foreign architecture to the Czech audience.
The history of the House of Art in České Budějovice dates back to the post-war years, but its significance has only crossed regional borders in the last two decades. Under the dramaturgical leadership of Michal Škoda, a native of Tábor, who became its curator in 1998, a small gallery has transformed into one of the most important centers of the domestic artistic and, in recent years, architectural scene. Michal Škoda gradually replaced local artists with leading figures of the domestic art scene (Adriena Šimotová, Stanislav Kolíbal, Ján Mančuška, Eva Koťátková, and Dominik Lang) as well as big names from abroad (notable examples include Mimmo Paladino, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Carsten Nicolai, and Martin Creed). Škoda's persistent interest in architecture has led him to organize a number of remarkable architectural exhibitions. In addition to prominent Czech architects and collectives (Josef Pleskot, Miroslav Šik, Projektil architekti, etc.), Michal Škoda also presented significant foreign creators in České Budějovice – Takeshi Hosaka, RCR Arquitectes, Pezo von Ellrichshausen, Gion Caminada, Marte Marte Architects, and the studio Caruso St. John. Just like the visual arts exhibitions, these presentations responded to the specific space of the gallery, which consists of five rooms with a total area of 150 square meters. The most attention so far has been attracted by the installation of the renowned Czech architect Jan Šépka, who, during his exhibition Perception in 2016, enclosed the baroque Samson Fountain in the square of České Budějovice within the intimate space of a circular layout and connected it with a wooden footbridge to the exhibition space of the House of Art. In recent years, lectures focused primarily on architecture and other educational activities – especially programs for children and students or workshops for children and parents – have become an integral part of the gallery's program. For his curatorial work at the House of Art, which has contributed to establishing a significant, prestigious gallery with international renown in České Budějovice, Michal Škoda received an honorary mention from the jury of the Architect of the Year 2016 competition as well as one of three awards for an exceptional achievement within the Czech Architecture Prize 2017. He can rightfully be considered one of the movers of Czech architecture. Admission for the event is 50 CZK. The next installment of the series Movers of Architecture will take place on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at 6 PM in Papírna Plzeň. Leading Czech architect and Dean of the Faculty of Art and Architecture at the Technical University of Liberec, Zdeněk Fránek, will give a presentation titled Naughty and Naughty Architecture. Through a series of four lectures and discussions, the association Pěstuj prostor aims to support and develop interest among local professionals and the broader public in architecture and built as well as landscape environments of the city. The series is prepared by architect and architectural historian Petr Klíma in collaboration with other members of the Pěstuj prostor association and with the support of the city of Plzeň, the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, and the Czech Architecture Foundation.
