Zlín - The Jewish part of the Forest Cemetery in Zlín will finally receive renovations and cleaning after years of neglect. Due to the lack of methodology and permission from the Jewish community, no one has been taking care of the graves until now. The issue was ultimately resolved by an agreement reached by the chairman of the Zlín Region, Ondřej Kapusta, and the regional rabbi, Karol Sidon. The specific instructions and consent were then provided by the Jewish Religious Community in Olomouc, Kapusta informed ČTK.
Employees of the municipal company Pohřebnictví Zlín will begin cleaning the Jewish section of the cemetery around mid-October. They will remove moss and years of accumulation from the tombstones. They will also clear away branches, leaves, soil, and other debris.
The renovations will not require any additional funds. Pohřebnictví Zlín receives an annual sum from the city for the care of the Forest Cemetery. "The subsidies for this company include funds for work throughout the cemetery, and care for the Jewish section is also included," added Kapusta.
One of the most notable Jewish cemeteries in the Zlín region is located in Holešov. During the summer months, dozens of volunteers from various corners of the world come each year to help maintain it. They also assist in organizing the Jewish Culture Week festival.
