Brno - The local government of the Brno district of Židenice is requesting changes to the controversial project for the redevelopment of the railway hub in Brno. The railway line runs in Židenice very close to residential buildings, and the local government is concerned that the increase in traffic after the redevelopment will significantly worsen living conditions. Today, the mayor of Židenice, Josef Veselý, informed journalists about this.

The local government will present its requests in the framework of the initiated zoning proceedings. The mayor also called on around 300 citizens affected by the issue in a letter to actively participate in the zoning proceedings with their objections. "They can only do so until August 24; any objections made later will not be considered," Veselý warned.
The local government of Brno-střed announced the commencement of the construction proceedings on the official notice board on July 17. "However, people often do not monitor official boards, so we decided to alert residents to this important moment when they can also become participants in the proceedings," Veselý said.
The local government is demanding increased protection against noise, the construction of a larger number of bridges so that the railway does not act as an impenetrable barrier, and compensation for property owners who face restrictions due to the presence of the railway. It also wants to advocate for the expansion of green spaces.
The management of the Railway Infrastructure Administration, which is the investor of the construction, told ČTK today that it will respond to the raised comments. According to Veselý, however, the administration has mostly rejected them in previous discussions.
The Židenice local government has already received two petitions from citizens complaining about excessive noise from the current railway line and requesting speed and frequency restrictions on train passages. After the redevelopment, however, trains are expected to pass through even faster and more frequently, the mayor pointed out.
The redevelopment of the railway hub in Brno has been discussed for several years. The entire project is estimated to cost just under 25 billion. The most controversy surrounds the relocation of the main train station 800 meters further south. Opponents warn that the relocation will complicate public transport and additionally deplete the city's budget for many years. Proponents argue that the relocation will not only allow modern train compositions to use the station but will also contribute to the development of the city center.
