Brno – In the preparation for the construction of the new Brno railway station and the overall reconstruction of the railway junction, there has been significant progress over the past year, according to Mojmír Nejezchleb, Deputy for Railway Modernization of the Railway Administration (SŽ). The winning architectural studio, which succeeded in the international competition, is now preparing an architectural study that will be a detailed conceptual design. SŽ is preparing a so-called project intention. Both documents are expected to be completed in about a year, after which it will be possible to further prepare the individual structures, Nejezchleb said at a press conference. However, it is still unclear when the construction of the new main station will begin. Construction in Židenice is set to start no earlier than 2024.
The first construction that travelers will experience is the reconstruction of the Brno-Židenice station, which is to be moved closer to Bubeníčkova Street in order to shorten the transfer to the tram at the Kuldova stop. At the same time, a underpass will be created so that it will also be possible to access the New Zbrojovka area, which is currently inaccessible directly from the station. "In an optimistic scenario, we would start in 2024, and it's a two-year construction," Nejezchleb said. Thanks to the reconstruction, the Židenice station will become barrier-free; currently, everyone has to go up stairs to the platform.
The second construction that should take place in the near future is the removal of the unsuitable iron bridges near Klíny Street between Židenice and the Táborská junction. "They are too noisy. Instead, there will be bridges with gravel beds," Nejezchleb stated. At the same time, space will be prepared for the laying of two more tracks leading to the new station.
Next year, a feasibility study is also expected to be completed, in which the city is cooperating with the Railway Administration, and which will determine the preferred mode of transportation that will run underground through Brno and connect the new station with the city center and Královo Pole.
The feasibility study for the reconstruction of the Brno junction, which was completed in the autumn four years ago, then spoke of total modernization costs of around 50 billion crowns.
