The representatives in Brno agreed to change the meadow into a building plot

Brno - The representatives of the Brno-střed district today cleared the way for a woman who owns a meadow listed in the city green areas to build on her property in Brno. The decision was passed by a coalition of civic and social democrats. The opposition was against it, arguing that the decision sets a precedent. People who own non-buildable land in Brno will now come forward, saying they also want to develop their plots, said Jasna Flamiková (Green Party) at the council meeting.
    Today's decision by the Brno-střed representatives does not mean that the owner will be able to start construction. Only city representatives can change the zoning plan. However, a path to this possibility is now open.
    Against the construction, a group of locals protested at today's council meeting. According to a young man who introduced himself as a landscape architecture student, the meadow provides a valuable entrance to Wilson Forest park. "The meadow is important for the biodiversity of the forest precisely because it has a different character and offers space for other animal and plant communities," he stated. According to him, the construction would limit the diversity of fauna and flora.
    Locals also testified at the meeting that residents from the area have been going to the plot for recreation since the 1930s. This sparked discontent among the coalition. "I am curious how many of you would welcome us turning your garden into public greenery for the benefit of the city of Brno," said Mayor Libor Šťástka. Deputy Mayor Ivan Kinzel (ČSSD) commented on the people's statements by saying he felt like he was in 1988. "If I have private property, how can someone else trespass on it?" he asked.
    The council meeting was marked by sharp disputes between the coalition and the opposition, as well as shouts from the audience. Due to this, the mayor interrupted the meeting several times. The session dragged on, starting at 4:00 PM, and the item regarding the development of the land was approved at 8:40 PM.
