Žamberk - The town of Žamberk in the Orlickoústecko region is preparing a transformation of the area around the Diviš Theatre and the primary school. The architectural study focuses on calming traffic and creating a safer space for pedestrians and cyclists. Thanks to the modifications, vehicles that merely pass through the town should disappear from the center. This was stated by the deputy mayor Ondřej Jireš (Žamberecká Democratic Coalition).

"The roads there primarily serve the people who use the services in the town center. Transit traffic complicates things, as drivers use it as a shortcut. After the project's completion, the streets will no longer serve for shortening the route," Jireš said.

According to the study by the architectural studio Archum, particularly Nádražní Street and 28. října Street should undergo modifications. Their connection to the adjoining parts of the town, including Vojáčkova Sady and the castle park, is being considered.

The architects focused on calming traffic and increasing safety. One-way traffic on the roads in this area, designated paths for pedestrians and cyclists, and new parking arrangements should help achieve this.

"Part of the proposal includes redesigning the intersection at Nádražní Street and 28. října Street; the intersection is in front of the school, it is unclear and unappealing. There are many unused areas. This should change, and there should be a one-way system on some streets," Jireš said.

The streets are set to be complemented with new sidewalks, green strips with trees, and furniture. A public space intended for gatherings and cultural events could be created in front of the Diviš Theatre. A large-format pavement, furniture that stands out from the pavement grid, and parts of staircases could also serve as seating.

The architects propose fixed elements in front of the school that children can jump on, sit on, or crawl through. All areas will include a combination of greenery and relaxation zones. "The adjustments should bring a significant improvement to the recreational function in front of the theatre and school," Jireš said.

The study includes space for a future extension of a cultural center, which would expand the facilities of the theatre in the future. However, according to Jireš, this is an expensive investment that will not be built for at least ten years. "Žamberk does not have its own cultural hall, so all social events take place in the private center Vonwillerka or in surrounding towns. This is our long-term sore point. We have a vacant plot by the theatre, which we acquired by exchange," Jireš said.

According to Jireš, the study of the transformation of the area by the theatre and school could be completed by the end of the year, followed by the design phase. Since this is a larger project, the town will implement it in stages. "Our priority will be to first create the project documentation for the area in front of the theatre and for Nádražní Street," said mayor Jiří Mencák (Žamberecká Democratic Coalition).
