PRAGUE - Workers began demolishing the unfinished shopping center near the Nové Butovice station in Prague 13 this week. The building, which local residents call the “roofs,” will be replaced by a new structure according to the investor's plans. What it will look like is not yet clear. Local officials are pleased that the unfinished center from Nové Butovice will be gone.

Construction of the shopping center began in the 1980s. Eight years ago, the municipality sold the remains to a private company, which then changed ownership again. "For several years we have been trying to have the building completed or demolished. It is the gateway to Prague 13," said Mayor David Vodrážka (ODS) to reporters today.
The work is expected to last about two months. David Lawn from Central Resource, which represents the building's owner Real Estate Metronom, stated that the costs will amount to 15 million crowns. The investor plans to build a new building on the site, primarily consisting of apartments.
"We are at the beginning of the process, negotiating with the authorities. We do not yet know exactly what we will build," Lawn said. However, he noted that the new building will not exceed the height of the surrounding houses. The investor had already obtained a permit four years ago for a project called Multifunctional Center Nové Butovice Metronom. "The building permit is for a different project than the one we want to build," Lawn pointed out.
Workers are demolishing the remains of the shopping center using heavy machinery. Residents nearby may be disturbed by noise and dust for several weeks. Construction debris will remain on site, said Robert Kucharovič from the company carrying out the demolition. After processing, it will be used for further construction activities, he added.
