PLZEŇ - One of the most famous and oldest buildings in the historical center of Plzeň will transform into a sports and entertainment center from April, one of the largest in the city. In the massive building dating from 1386, which is part of a peninsula and a weir on the Mža River, four professional bowling lanes, squash courts, aerobics halls, and a garden restaurant styled like an ancient mill will be created. Radek Urban, co-owner of the complex, stated this to ČTK.

"The reconstruction will require 40 to 50 million crowns," he added. The owners purchased the extensive area at an auction two years ago. Its components include a peninsula where they plan to build a beach volleyball court, petanque area, and a large space for children's and youth activities.
By the end of the year, there will also be a luxurious four-star hotel in the building, of which there is currently only one in Plzeň. The owners, who are also preparing a rehabilitation center there, have preserved the wooden floors and supporting beams in the building. "The architecture of the historical mill has remained in its original form," Urban stated.
The city hall of the central Plzeň district welcomes the project very much. "This is one of the most beautiful places in Plzeň. The city and especially its center lack sports facilities and quality accommodation," stated the mayor of the largest city district, Jaroslava Maříková.
The six-story building served as a grain mill for several hundred years until 2000. It stands by a monument-protected bridge over the Mža River. It was burned down in 1883 and modernized three years later by the renowned Plzeň entrepreneur Hermann Kussi. The complex has included a small hydroelectric power station operating since 1932.
The operators of the sports and entertainment center Kalikovský mlýn plan to create a leisure center for Plzeň and its surroundings from the peninsula and want to organize cultural events such as concerts, medieval entertainment, and recesist trips on the Mža River.
