Brno - The Brno University of Technology today opened the reconstructed campus of the Faculty of Civil Engineering between Veveří and Žižková streets. The construction, which took two years, cost 420.5 million crowns and will improve opportunities for doctoral students. The number of classrooms has increased, and laboratories have been renovated, which will enable top-notch research, said Dean Rostislav Drochytka at a press conference today. "The new spaces will allow for even greater dynamism in the faculty's development. During the reconstruction, emphasis was placed on newly created programs focused on architecture. Students of civil engineering architecture have gained a new facility," said Drochytka. The faculty should also become more attractive to international students. "Especially the Portuguese like to come here," added Drochytka. For all students, the opening of a new cafeteria and restaurant is also a great benefit, resolving the long-standing issue of low capacity at the former dining facility. The building of the Faculty of Civil Engineering has been operational since 1911, but from 1951 to 1992, it served the Antonín Zápotocký Military Academy. "The completion of the faculty's campus is considered the culmination of all the phases of reconstruction that we have been carrying out here continuously since 1989. It combines a historic style with modern construction technologies," said VUT Rector Karel Rais. The construction was funded 85 percent by the European Union, with the remaining funds coming from the school's budget. Due to financial and construction-technical reasons, it was not possible to build an underground connection under Žižková Street, so the school will initiate a safer transition across the street than currently exists. The Faculty of Civil Engineering is one of the founding faculties and has the most students among the faculties at VUT. There are 6,500 students studying in bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs here.
