The leadership of the Ostrava district does not want a hypermarket in Přívoz

Ostrava - A new hypermarket with parking for 300 cars is expected to be built in Přívoz, Ostrava. A private investor wants to construct it on Muglinovská Street, where he owns land next to the sports complex. The leadership of the Moravská Ostrava and Přívoz district opposes the construction and seeks to prevent it, said district mayor Miroslav Svozil (ODS) to ČTK. According to him, a residential building should be located at the entrance to Komenského sady, not a metal hall. A representative of Sallerova výstavba, which builds shopping centers, stated that the company has long-term plans for its land.
    "We are opposed to a hypermarket with a parking lot that would border the sports complex and Komenského sady. Metal halls should no longer be allowed in the central Ostrava district. Local residents also do not agree with a large retail store. During a public discussion, they told us that if there were to be a hypermarket in Přívoz, it should be near the highway ramp," said the mayor to ČTK.
    The district leadership is negotiating with the landowner about different uses for the land. "We are prepared to accept a reasonable project - a residential building, an administrative building, or even a stone retail center," said Svozil.
    However, Sallerova výstavba has long-term plans for the land. "Whether there will be a Tesco there is still a matter of negotiation. We will not disclose more at this moment," said a company representative who wished to remain anonymous. "At this moment, I cannot confirm that we are preparing to build a store in the center of Ostrava," said Tesco spokesperson Jana Matoušková to ČTK.
    The city district council rejected the planned hypermarket construction this week. "Perhaps we have another tool to prevent the construction - the sidewalk on Muglinovská Street belongs to the city. However, an access road to the shopping center should run through it," suggested Svozil.
    This week, the city council also dealt with the area where the hypermarket is to be built. However, the submitted material was withdrawn from the discussion. Council members were supposed to decide whether to complete the change to the zoning plan, after which the entire area would be functionally unified for civic amenities. This would expand the landowner's options for its use, said city hall spokesperson Andrea Vojkovská.
    "We withdrew the material at the request of one of the council members so that the city district could still express its opinion. The change to the zoning plan has been discussed for almost two years, and the district has not yet provided any comments or challenged it. At this moment, we are holding back something that should have been addressed a long time ago," said Deputy Mayor Zdeněk Trejbal to ČTK. He added that the city hall has not issued any official statement regarding whether or not a hypermarket should be built in Přívoz.
