Svoboda nad Úpou (Trutnovsko) - A new bus station began serving passengers in Svoboda nad Úpou in the Trutnov region this morning. The construction, costing approximately 35 million crowns, will provide residents of the mountain town and tourists traveling to the Krkonoš with better facilities, said Milan Oravec, the mayor of Svoboda nad Úpou, to ČTK. "The main goal of the project was to improve conditions for tourists traveling to the mountain resorts of the Krkonoš," Oravec said. Passengers had previously only been able to use a few shelters on the area in front of the train station, but now they will find social facilities, transportation information, and refreshments in the covered terminal. "The station also includes a parking lot for cars and bike racks for cyclists," Oravec added. Svoboda received most of the funding for the construction of the station from European subsidies; without this support, the city would not have initiated the construction of the terminal. The station in Svoboda, where the railway from Trutnov ends, is used in the winter months by ski buses that transport skiers to several ski areas. In the summer months, Svoboda serves as a stop for specially adapted buses for transporting bicycles. In the Hradec Králové Region, cities have built several new bus stations in recent years. For example, a new terminal has been operational in Hradec Králové since 2008, while Rokytnice in the Orlické Mountains opened a new station two years earlier in Rychnovský.
