In Prague, a school for lighting designers is being established

Prague - Students will learn about the connection between light and sound, the use of lasers in theater, or the color of light at the newly established Prague Institute of Light Design (ISD), whose two-semester educational program will open this September. The course currently lacks accreditation from the Ministry of Education, and the tuition will be 10,000 crowns. Today, the project was presented to journalists.
    "This year we will focus on theater; otherwise, lighting design can also be used in architecture, at concerts, and practically anywhere. A lot of theatrical performances are being created, and there are very few professional lighting designers," said lighting designer and co-organizer of the project Jan Beneš-McGadie to ČTK. Classes will take place at the Alfred ve dvoře theater, Disk, Duncan Center, and Archa.
    The ISD project was created within the Czech Organization of Scenographers, Theater Architects, and Technicians, and it was supported by a grant of 450,000 crowns from the Ministry of Culture. The more than two-million crown budget will be supplemented by private sources and tuition, which will cost 5,000 crowns per semester for one student. The organizers would also like to obtain accreditation from the Ministry of Education and have offered collaboration to Prague's DAMU and Brno's JAMU.
    The School of Light Design will be two semesters long for now and will be taught by Czech and foreign lecturers. It aims to train quality lighting designers who will be able to work both with lighting technology and with light itself as an expressive medium. Students will also be introduced to theory, such as the history of theatrical lighting, physical views on light and color, the functions of the human eye, and ways of perception.
