Prague - In December, after years of preparation, the first film museum will open in Prague. It will be located in the center of Prague at the Mozarteum on Jungmann Street. Terezie Křížkovská, one of the museum's founders, said this today to ČTK. The National Film Museum (NaFilm) has been in preparation for four years since the idea was conceived by students from Charles University. Until now, it has been presented in the form of temporary exhibitions at several locations in Prague.

The organizing team has now secured space in the historic building designed by architect Jan Kotěra. This is where, among other things, Ema Destinnová sang, the D34 theater founded by E. F. Burian operated, and the music publishing house Supraphon was based, as well as a gallery.

"Our goal is to establish a museum of Czech film, a vibrant center for the general public and professionals, which is lacking in the Czech Republic. A museum that will educate, complement the developing film and media education in schools, and present national cinematography to both Czech and foreign visitors in an interactive way," states the museum's website.

"Establishing a film museum was initially more of a crazy idea during my studies - I visited several film museums abroad and was surprised that there was none like that in our country. But what can students change, many people asked us. Five years have passed, and now we know for sure that they can,"
said Adéla Mrázová, one of the founders of the NaFilM museum. A number of Czech filmmakers have supported the idea of the film museum, including Jiří Menzel, Zdeněk Svěrák, Olga Sommerová, Helena Třeštíková, and Jan Hřebejk, who backed the students through video spots.

The founders of the museum promise that it will not be a conventional museum exhibition. A team of young curators and architects is creating installations that offer space for personal creativity and imagination. NaFilM will transport visitors both to the past, where they will be able to try assembling a projector and screening a film the old way, and to the future through virtual reality or holograms. The creators want visitors, regardless of age, to experience film and its history firsthand.

The museum has the support of the State Fund for Cinematography, Charles University, and the Visegrad Fund. The remaining funds needed to open the museum are being raised through a public collection on a crowdfunding portal.
