Brno – The stall sales in the underpass under the main train station in Brno have ended. The city gave notice to the company that rented the stalls at the end of last year so that it could start the renovation of the underpass this year at a cost of tens of millions of crowns. After the renovation, there will be no vendors selling clothing, shoes, and bags, but only those with products approved by the city council, said Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL), the deputy mayor, to ČTK.

Vendors have already vacated their stalls in the part of the underpass that leads from the Tesco department store to the lobby under the tram platforms. Some vendors still remain there, but the city is engaged in court disputes to terminate their activities.

The city decided to renovate the uninviting space, through which thousands of people pass daily, after ownership was clarified in the courts. The city already has a concept for the future appearance and is finalizing the documentation to select a company that will work in the underpass. "Once we complete the documentation, we will also know the exact competitive price. And once we select a company in the competition, we will also know the deadline for when the first stage of the renovation will be completed. At that moment, we also want to call for bids for vendors in the new stalls," said Hladík.

According to the deputy, the vendors should include fast food, groceries, baked goods, nuts, and there should also be a newsstand. Firms that specialize in filling new commercial spaces and can ensure the desired mix of traders will also be considered, said Hladík.

While work will be carried out this year in the first stage from the east to Zvonařka and then branching to the tram stops in front of the station, the second stage is expected to start next year in the northern part under Nádražní Street, where the tram platforms are located. This stage is related to the transformation of the area in front of the station, which is planned to look different than it does today. Instead of three staircases, there may only be two with escalators leading from the underpass to the trams. "We would like to carry out this stage in the years 2023 to 2024, and it will be a challenge for the new city leadership," Hladík said. This will emerge from the elections that will take place this fall.

The second stage and the reconstruction of the area in front of the train station are linked to the overall long-term planned reconstruction of Benešova Street, which is divided into three stages. They will be carried out as funding becomes available and as the city manages to obtain building permits. One part is Malinovského Square around the Morava Palace, the second part is the street around the bus station, and the third part is the area in front of the station. Hladík expects architects to propose its design in a competition. "It should look similar to Joštova Street, that is, an open space without railings and without cars," he said.

If Brno's plan is successful, it will culminate in a complete transformation of the train station and the surrounding area. In recent years, the Czech Railways Administration has completely modernized the railway part of the station, the company Brno New Station Development is nearing the completion of the renovation of the protected station building, and after the renovation, the nearby Grand bus station is also being updated.
