Plzeň - An unusual rest reading room is now available for the people of Plzeň in the city center. They have access to books, magazines, and Internet connectivity in a specially adapted container in Kopeckého Sady in front of the Měšťanská Beseda. The reading room in this extraordinary space was created as part of the project Containers to the World, which aims to "wake up" and connect the city. Similar containers will be placed in 30 locations in Plzeň, not only in the center but also in adjacent parks and residential areas of several neighborhoods. Hana Čekanová from the organizational team told ČTK.
"This reading room is the first taste of how an ordinary shipping container can be used to enliven public spaces. It is intended to provide shelter for passersby and will also provide information about the festival that starts on May 10. We are also preparing a café, library, literary container, theater, film container, observatory, church, and a scooter rental," she stated.
Each of the containers will have its own operating schedule according to the program. "For example, those showcasing non-profit organizations will be open all day, while music ones will open only for specific concerts," she explained. In Plzeň, a second similar container will be opened on Wednesday by the river in an area called U Ježíška. "There, Michal Malátný will perform with several other musicians," Čekanová said.
The event, which will premiere this year, will also take place in six other cities - in Prague, Brno, Ostrava, Olomouc, Zlín, and Mariánské Lázně. The idea originated in Plzeň, and the organizers believe that the event will help revive public spaces not only through organized performances but also that people from one neighborhood will gather at an unusual café or relaxation area to discuss their environment and what needs to be improved or changed, and so on.
