Kolín - A smaller shopping center with apartments is to be built in the area of the former gas company in Kolín, near the railway station. The private investor estimates the construction costs at approximately 80 million crowns, and around 30 people are expected to find employment on-site. After obtaining all necessary opinions and permits, the works will last about ten months, said Petr Václavík, the owner of the investment company Luma, to ČTK. The Central Bohemian Regional Office is currently assessing the project from the perspective of its environmental impact. The non-functional industrial zone, a so-called brownfield, located between the streets Polepská, Plynárenská, and Královská cesta, covering an area of approximately two hectares, was purchased by the investor a few years ago after the gasworks in Kolín ceased operations. The individual unattractive buildings in the area are currently being temporarily rented to about 30 companies. According to a new study, the majority of the original buildings are to be demolished as part of the Shopping Center Stará plynárna project, and Václavík plans to preserve the main part of the existing greenery. "The city has approached this location over time, it has surrounded it, and now it is 20,000 square meters waiting for a new opportunity," Václavík said. The new complex will consist of two buildings with several shops, a garden center, and about 20 apartments. It will also include a small restaurant and a children's playground. More than 130 cars will park in the area. "It is a cohesive project that belongs to the city; it is in line with the zoning plan and will resolve this part once and for all," said Jiří Košťál, the architect of the city of Kolín, who commented on the project, to ČTK. According to Mayor Vít Rakušan (Change for Kolín), further discussion about the project is necessary. "In general, I think that the improvement of this area is fine, but we still need to discuss the project to meet the expectations of both the city and the investor," he told ČTK. In Kolín, there is also consideration for the reconstruction of the dilapidated castle, where a hotel and library could be created. According to councilors, the castle could be repaired with money from the so-called Norwegian funds. Construction of a business incubator is already set to begin this year in the castle courtyard.
