Brno - In January 2013, the South Moravian Medical Emergency Service is expected to start operations in its new headquarters in Brno. Its construction in Bohunice will cost 172.5 million crowns, said the spokesperson for the paramedics, Barbora Zuchová, to CTK. The building today began with the laying of the foundation stone for the four-story structure.
Currently, paramedics in Brno operate in inadequate facilities. Their main station is a building from 1886 located on 28th October Square. The Red Cross used it in its early days. The building is outdated, spatially inadequate, and designed in such a way that it cannot be modernized for healthcare professionals.
They are to move to a building that will be located next to the University Hospital in Brno-Bohunice. This is the largest medical facility in Moravia, with its numerous specialized departments. The relocation of the emergency service headquarters from the center of Brno to the outskirts is advantageous for many reasons. The Bohunice hospital has an emergency department that is most often the destination for ambulances with patients. Nearby are highways D1 and D2 and the expressway R52.
The new building will provide facilities for almost one hundred drivers and paramedics, as well as a team of 22 doctors. It will include an operational center, technical support, and will serve as the headquarters for the paramedics' management. Additionally, there will be a conference hall for training up to 80 people.
The construction will be funded by the South Moravian Region. After the new headquarters is opened, the emergency service will eliminate disadvantageous leases for buildings where it currently operates. In the future, it is planned to establish its response stations at two more locations in Brno - in Černovice and in the Ponava area.
