Brno - The South Moravian Emergency Medical Service has a new headquarters in Brno-Bohunice starting today. It is a modern five-story building neighboring the teaching hospital. The construction of the new emergency service building took a year and cost nearly 174 million crowns. Milan Klusák, the director of the ambulance service, told ČTK. The medical staff had previously been located in outdated facilities on October 28 Square. The old building was established in 1886. It was initially used by the Red Cross. The layout of the building was such that it could no longer be modernized for the healthcare workers. Therefore, the South Moravian Region decided that a new headquarters was necessary. It was built next to the Faculty Hospital in Brno-Bohunice, which, with its specialized departments, is the largest healthcare facility in Moravia. The Bohunice hospital has an emergency department, which is most frequently visited by ambulances with patients. Close to the new headquarters are highways D1 and D2 and expressway R52, which are the main routes to Vienna, Bratislava, and Prague, where the medical staff respond to accidents. Now, the response times for these interventions will be shortened, as ambulances will not have to pass through the center of Brno, which is nearly full of cars all day. The new building provides facilities for nearly a hundred drivers and rescuers and 22 doctors. It houses an operations center, technical support, will serve as the headquarters for the rescue management, and will also feature a conference hall for approximately 80 people. After the opening of the new headquarters, the emergency service will be released from unfavorable leases of buildings where it has currently been located. In the future, it is planned to establish additional emergency response units in two other locations in Brno - in Černovice and in the Ponava area, within two years.
