Brno - Brno has modified a section of the bank of the Old Ponávka River above the Komárov housing estate for 20 million crowns, where a park area for rest and relaxation has been created near Kalová Street. This is the first phase of the revitalization of the four-kilometer stretch of the Old Ponávka River. Further sections are divided into several phases, which could take an estimated ten years and cost around 200 million crowns, said the mayor's deputy Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL) to ČTK today.
The Old Ponávka is a watercourse that connects two Brno rivers. It branches off from the Svitava River at Tkalcovská Street and mostly flows through what is now a former industrial part of Brno. It flows into the Svratka River in Komárov near the tram loop.
According to Hladík, the adjustment of the area above the housing estate is the first step towards the planned revitalization of the nearly four-kilometer long Old Ponávka River. The city is working on the next phases both south towards the Svratka and in the opposite direction upstream towards Lidl on Dornych Street, the heating plants, and the Svitava River. "These are works that will take ten to twelve years and are estimated to cost 200 million," Hladík stated. According to him, it will also depend on what the city's budget will be considering the crisis caused by the coronavirus.
Above the Komárov housing estate, there was previously a concrete area, according to designer Olga Veselá, which people used as a parking lot, and there was also a fence in place. Now there is grass, benches, and pathways for pedestrians and cyclists. The previously regulated stream has been adjusted to a more natural state, and three footbridges have been created. People can also come right to the water, which they can cross over stones. "In our work, we wanted to maximize the preservation of the trees along the watercourse. We added more trees, bushes, and herbs," Hladík explained. The construction was carried out in coordination with the adjustments of the neighboring land of a private investor.
