Prague - The famous babies by sculptor David Černý, which have been hanging on the Žižkov television transmitter for several years, are also now on Prague's Kampa. Near the Sovovy mlýny, unlike the black infants in Žižkov, there are three bronze ones.
The sculptor, whose works can be found in several locations in Prague, recently placed another piece of his near Kampa, in Kinsky Square. During the August 40th anniversary of the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact troops, he brought a torso of his pink tank to the small park. The torso is a reminder of the former Smíchov tank, which Černý painted pink in 1991.
After the complications with the tank, which had by then already become a work of art, Černý wanted to place at least a symbolic torso in Smíchov - but politicians rejected it. Today, the torso and the original tank belong to the Military Historical Museum. The torso has been displayed for several years in Lázně Bohdaneč in Pardubice.
On the morning of August 21st this year, Černý brought it from there to Prague and installed it in the small park. He also added a white occupancy stripe to the tank to express his stance on Russia's current behavior not only in foreign policy matters.
The sculptor did not have permission to place the pile of pink metal. The Prague 5 municipality initially considered whether the tank would interfere with the irrigation system located beneath the lawn. They found out that it wouldn't and have not commented on the torso since. If the tank were to bother officials or politicians, it is unclear who they would need to request its removal from. Černý is not its owner. He found a sponsor for the transportation of the four-ton torso and its installation in the park using a hydraulic jack.
