Brandýs nad Labem-Stará Boleslav - The construction of a joint primary school for up to 1080 children in Stará Boleslav has received final building permission. Its issuance was delayed by almost a year due to appeals from two individuals. However, at the beginning of March, the regional building authority confirmed the original decision with amendments. The school will be built by a voluntary association of municipalities, which includes an additional 13 municipalities besides Brandýs nad Labem-Stará Boleslav. Most of the estimated costs of 1.5 billion crowns will be covered by a grant from the Ministry of Education, for which it will apply once the grant title is announced, said the chairman of the association, Robert Pecha, to ČTK today.
"Currently, we are preparing to announce a competition for the contractor; we are trying to select a type of procurement procedure that will lead to the lowest price," said Pecha.
The school, which is to be built on a three-hectare plot between Třebízského and Lhotecká streets, is being designed by the studio Chybik+Kristof Associated Architects. Four classes are planned for each grade. According to Pecha, the school is unique in both the number of municipalities involved and the size of the area.
At a February meeting, city representatives discussed, among other things, whether a school of this size is still needed given the trend of declining birth rates. The association is working with a demographic study from 2017 and its updates from subsequent years. However, Pecha believes it is possible that the Ministry of Education may also request a new update. "It depends on how the final version of the grant title turns out at the Ministry of Education," said Pecha.
The city of Brandýs nad Labem-Stará Boleslav has thus far invested about 31 million crowns in preparations for the school construction, which included expenses such as the architectural competition and part of the project work. An additional approximately 10.5 million crowns has been invested as a contribution to the association, Pecha said. The association plans to select the contractor for the construction by the end of the year and to start construction work next year after the grant for the building has been awarded. The new school should be completed within two years from the start of construction.
